In 2001, Bakers proudly became a member of the iconic Australian group, Wesfarmers. As a leading business of the Wesfarmers Industrial and Safety Division, Bakers was a natural addition to the group’s mining, gas, agricultural and hardware businesses.

Wesfarmers began in June 1914 as the Westralian Farmers Co-operative and for most of its early history was primarily involved with the provision of services and merchandise to Western Australia's rural community.

Seventy years later, with the farmers co-operative as the majority shareholder, Wesfarmers Limited listed on the Australian Securities Exchange in November 1984. Since that time Wesfarmers has consistently been ranked in the top group of Australian companies when measured in terms of total shareholder return.

Our History

From A.E Baker & Co to Bakers Construction + Industrial Supplies

Bakers Construction + Industrial Supplies began business in 1921 when Alfred Baker opened a hardware store in Guildford before naming it A.E. Baker & Co in 1928. Since then Bakers have been focused on providing a flexible, responsive and personal service to a range of customers involved in all industries.

1921	Alfred Baker Opens Hardware Store in Guildford NSW.
1928	Alfred and Brother Thomas Open New Store in Parramatta under the Name A.E. Baker & Co.
1946	Move to Larger Premises in George St Parramatta.
1961	J Blackwood & Son Ltd acquire A.E. Baker & Co.
1974	Move from Parramatta to current location in Forge St Blacktown. Refocussed from a traditional hardware store to the innovative distribution outlet it is today.
1983	The Bakers “Blue Knight” is introduced, symbolising integrity and service.
1984	Blackwoods is acquired by Howard Smith.
2001	Howard Smith acquired by Wesfarmers Ltd.
2003	The name Bakers Construction + Industrial is introduced to highlight the transition to the “leading edge” supply solutions provider we are today.
2012	Bakers changes its name to Bakers Construction + Industrial Supplies to better reflect the way Bakers is a leading choice as a single source of workplace supplies.
